Cities as new dictators

1 – Nowadays, cities are new dictators, dramatically influencing forms of life that inhabit them. The city shapes the human being, whom in its turn has shaped the city in the first place.

2 – Connections within the city – In this day and age it becomes difficult to accurately define the city. Earlier, the urban phenomenon was easily distinguishable from the rural areas, namely when the city was still in between walls, while its surroundings were almost exclusively filled with agricultural activities. Gradually, nevertheless, both the urban and the rural landscape became homogeneous, thus leading to the emergence of compound morphologies in either case. Connections between them are thus not done through the means of roads, but through “time accelerators”.

3 – Man’s initial choice of living in society was not just due to survival reasons, but also because its own nature demanded he would do so… Collective dwelling has then emerged as a basic need.

4 – The city grows and develops itself in a similar fashion to tree branches (fig.2).

5 – Human interaction arising from primary contacts is the dominant feature of less industrialized cities, rural areas or small social groups.

6/8 – Industrialization and urbanization have established a way of life in which primary contact is reduced, giving then way to secondary contacts and impersonal relations to become generalized. We can thus observe an inverse tendency between the emergence of large population settlements and human interaction.
The coming about of mass consumption society amounts to the emergence of a mass produced human being. Within this social model, the human being is no longer regarded as a person, giving now place to a product/ideas/merchandize-devouring-machine.
In the post-industrial society general personal contact is merely physical; social interactions’ meaning is reduced to its formal social roles and professional duties. As purely formal contacts become generalized, anonymity expands. Man lives within the crowd, be he fails to interact with others as a person: crowds in the streets, traffic jams and human swarms in beaches are frequent social demonstrations of this. Within these, human interaction is seldom seen. Individuals do not regard themselves as people, rather as objects. In this context, loneliness sensation grows stronger.

9 – The current city shapes the being, whom is also shaped and who, in its turn, shapes the city yet again. The contemporary city is the result of human interaction, or the lack of it, with whose characteristics – idol production, marginalization, poorly defined limits, amongst many others – it leads the being to create the city in accordance to what the latter makes him feel, and so on an so forth. The idea is to conceive the current society as a product of man’s grouping need, but which contributes to his growing apart and to sociologically approach the current city as a product of days, of diversity and multiculturalism that does not leave room for real individuality or communal.

It urges to create new ways of sociologically understanding the power of the city creator, and the city’s power over the creator, in order to better understand contemporary city´s underlying principles.
